Survey: Do You Have a Record Player?

2008-3-12recordplayer.jpg
We have one, but it doesn't get used as often as we would like. We loved some of the DJ's spaces we've seen, where the record player is as much of a design choice as the furniture.

But, we wondered how many people out there have record players and use them? If you do use them, when? All the time, or just on special occasions?

Take our survey below, and let us know your thoughts on records in the comments.

I do not own one, but I have been lusting after the Pro-Ject Debut III for awhile. The thing is totally sleek, and comes in different colors (red, blue, yellow, white, silver, etc). Definitely a record player designed around being a piece of furniture.

I have to say that any Jazz, blues, or even in some cases hip hop, nothing sounds better than vinyl and two stereo speakers. I personally love in and when I get home from work, i like to sit down with my wife and baby boy, a glass of scotch, and we listen and talk for an hour before dinner. It is the best way to relax after a long day and a great way to spend some quality family time. And my baby boy will have a great music background because of it. I love it and i recommend it to anyone who feels that something is missing in their day.

My boyfriend got one for xmas and he loves it... he is constantly searching for good record stores and I bought him some frames for his special lps for his birthday... we like to listen to it while cooking, my dog particularly likes it when we play the moody blues (a vintage from when his dad was in college)

My boyfriend has one, and a few hundred records. He never listens to any of them, except Pink Floyd records when he gets drunk.

I'd really like him to go through them all and throw away the ones he doesn't like or has never listened to. But, alas, he is far too stubborn for that.

I picked up an old Sony linear tracking turntable on eBay a few years back - it's a model I coveted as a teenager in the '80s. I seldom use it - now as then, vinyl with all of its clicks, pops and distortion (especially the high frequency harmonics) gives me a massive headache after 30 minutes or so of listening.

But it's nice to be able to occasionally play a couple of old records I still have in my collection that aren't available on CD, mostly a few old singles I also picked up on eBay.

I own one, use it, collect vinyl. But then, I am a music freak! Mine isn't anything special, but it's definitely serviceable. I actually bought it at a yard sale for 50 cents and then spent about 60 bucks getting it up and running (there's a great Turntable Service place in Columbus, OH called "Needle in a Haystack"). I am ALWAYS on the hunt for great record stores and special vinyl. Emily and I have a pretty decent collection together that totally reflects the breadth of our tastes from the classic must-haves (Frampton Comes Alive, anyone?) to the new classics (The Tain and In the Aeroplane Over The Sea are two of my faves) to obscure relics (Two recent acquisitions I'm REALLY proud of, Zager and Evans, "2525" and Scott Walker 1) to new releases (Spoon's Ga Ga Ga ga Ga and Radiohead's Discbox). We love our vinyl collection and we love listening to records. It really does sound better than anything, even when it's being piped through our crummy stereo.

And Burnstoemerge- you shouldn't ask a music lover to give up their music, even if he never listens to it. Who knows, it could be valuable some day. Unless you're desperate for the space, you should just leave him be!

i have had just a standard turn table for a few years now. It was under the bed for a while due to a crummy boom box stereo, now i have a newer crummy stereo that works with a turntable.

I have a small collection of records that are just fun stuff mostly. The best one is my Dad's old Ventures album. Nothing beats some original surf music with the pops and cracks of old vinyl.
