Survey: Do you own a DVD player?

2007-02-20-dvdplayer.PNG
Since so many devices are able to play DVDs, we are wondering how important it is to you to actually own a dedicated DVD player. With our computers and gaming consoles serving dual purposes, is a DVD player really necessary, especially in a small space? If you use something other than a dedicated player, let us know in the comments. (image courtesy of J&R) -Kelly

Gaming consoles come in a distant third place when compared to HTPCs and good dedicated DVD players in terms of picture quality.

I use my Mac Mini both as my tv and dvd player. I'm more than happy with its image quality, as its hooked up to a high-res LCD monitor.

Yes to dedicated DVD players. I have 2 cheapo ones that I hacked to disable the region-coding. Because I loves me my import DVDS...

I don't have a seperate DVD player for my TV; I watch DVDs on my MacBook. I can lie on the sofa and have it on my lap; the small screen doesn't bother me.

I think the right question is: has anyone bought one in the last 3 years? I own mine from about 8 years ago, but have not actually bought a DVD in over 2.

I used to watch movies on my laptop until my son reached tv-watching age, then I broke down and bought a tv and dvd player. He could wreak a lot of havoc on my laptop, but there's not much he can do to the tv.

Heretofore, I've watched DVDs on one or the other of my Powerbooks. Now, with my brand new HUGE 24" iMac I think I'll be watching DVDs there.

Yes, absolutely. We love our Oppo for its upscaling capabilities.

It's just my husband and I, and we don't watch enough TV to own one, so we just pop the DVD in the widescreen laptop :)

Of course. To answer Craig's question, I was an early adopter of the technology too...and so I recently bought a new player, which can write to DVDs and has a built-in hard drive for Tivo-like capabilities.

I used to watch DVD on my iBook when I was a kid and didn't have any money. Now I have the best TV on the market from Philips and a DVD player to go with it. The features you get from a DVD player, you just can't get from a PC or game console, like remote control, precision >> and

Of course, everyone with a nice television should have an upscaling DVD player for beautiful resolution on an HD set!
