Survey: Does Having Two Screens Improve Productivity?

ant-dualscreen.jpgHere's one for you. I have always had two monitors at work, but I really can't convince myself I have increased efficiecy at all despite having such a set-up. Do you think having dual displays increases your productivity? If yes, how so?

I love having dual monitors at work. When I get home or work on my laptop, it can be difficult to adjust to a single display. To say it's more productive is misleading, but it definitely keeps me from switching windows as frequently.

In my job I pretty much have to have two monitors. I work in GIS (I make maps), so there are quite a few times when I'll need to have two files open at once - usually AutoCAD and ArcGIS - comparing the physical location of objects from one to the other. While this could be done with one monitor, I think it would be far less efficient to do so.

Well, if I am using my desktop and my laptop is nearby (if it is time machine-ing) I will use both computers without even thinking about it. It is completely natural to me.
That makes me a total nerd, doesn't it?

I think that I would enjoy two monitors. I don't know if it would make me more productive, though. Getting a Mac at work would make me more productive, and work video content would not be taking up all the space on my hard drive.

I wouldn't say it's doubled my productivity but they've certainly made working easier.

I frequently use a program that throws tons of information at me and hides it in tabs. With two monitors, I can move those tabs so the information is next to the model it applies to. It also makes programming in Visual Basic (yes, I know, not real programing, blah blah blah) with Excel much easier. I don't need or really even want two monitors for home use, though.

As a web designer working in Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc... having 2 monitors is necessary. I can't imagine going back to just one.

the owner of a lighting company told me yesterday that sales efficiency has improved by at least 20 percent at their company since they started using dual monitors. that's significant.

it's a bit disturbing to see humanity push the limits of neuronal synapses, though.
