After hearing about Dena Christofferson's daughter's little texting problem, ending in a whoppin' $4756 monthly bill that accumulated after her record-breaking 10,003 outbound SMS texts (in addition to her 10,000 inbound), we just had to throw this one out there. Any readers out there have a texting addiction they'd be willing like to share? Don't worry, we'll accept third person versions.
Personally, we find the rates that phone company charge for SMS text simply ridiculous, so we try to avoid it whenever we can. Seriously, does it really cost them $0.10-0.20 per text message sent?
Anyway, we'd love to hear any horror stories of texting gone out of control, requiring someone to intervene (or in the case with Dena Christofferson's daughter - permanent hammer action to the phone). Kind of reminds of me of that mildly entertaining show, Intervention. Ah yes, this would make a great episode..

I send text messages alot, but that's mainly because I hate talking on the phone. If I could have a product that did everything the iPhone did, but without the phone feature, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I hate texting. Hate it. But I have relatives and friends who won't communicate any other way. It's so annoying -- trying to type on my teeny tiny cell phone.

Oh -- SpaceMonkeyX -- have you looked at the iPod touch?

i actually prefer texting since i'm not a fan of the social networks. but i don't know enough people to warrant a $4700 phone bill!

How about a choice in the survey for never sent a text message in my life! I am just old enough that I believe it's faster to call than to type out what I want to say...

My plan is only 250 texts a month and that's more than sufficient. I never go over - even during heavy texting season (christmas, etc).

I don't even have a cell phone, and I don't intend on getting one until I absolutely must have one. Even then, I don't think I'd use it much.

10000? That's more than 300 a day. That's sending 1 every five minutes or so... 24/7.
I sent/received almost 1000 one month. That has been the extent of my texting overhaul. The bill that month did not make me happy...
I have to admit that texting can be extremely convenient. Especially when you know that someone is at work, or in class. Sometimes a message is important but not immediately, and you can invite 6 friends to the movies with you on Friday without having to sit on the phone for an hour talking to them all for ten minutes each, and interrupting whatever they are doing.
Last night I got a text from my boyfriend that he wouldn't get out of his auditions until about 2 hours after he THOUGHT he would get out. He couldn't call me without being rude, and this way I didn't have to worry about him lying in a ditch somewhere.

I simply cannot fathom that many texts... I feel like I text pretty frequently, and I have never come close to going over my 300/month plan.
I was always very anti-texting... Until I happened to get a slide out phone with a qwerty keyboard. Opened up a whole new world... ha.
And sidenote/rant, because iPhone/iPod touch were mentioned... Can I just say I can't stand their text entry?? It prevents me from even considering buying them...

mlleErica - Yes, I have, but that requires a wifi connection, which isn't always available. Nor can the Touch do SMS texting - only email - which not everyone has on their phone, putting me out of touch with quite a few folks. So if they could make an iPhone without the phone (but still use the 3G network of AT&T), I'd be all over it.

Yeah. I have a prepaid plan with t-mobile. I use text more than calling, because like many i hate talking on the phone. Even so, I text fairly frequently, and still manage to only spend about 10 dollars a month on my cell phone service. Frankly, I think contracts unless you are a super heavy phone user are a ripoff. Mostly because with prepaid plans carries are not allowed to charge any extra....that is no taxes or weird charges, just the flat rate per minute, or however the plan works.

I've got unlimited texts on my BlackBerry plan and I'm so glad for it.
Like Rolen the Great said up there, texting is great when something is more urgent than an email but less urgent than a 'drop-everything-to-pick-up-the-ringing-phone' phone call.

i hate talking on the phone and the 4 people i text the most (my best friends) are hundreds of miles away from me. we have very different lives and schedules (i work 730-330, one friend is a SAHM/student), so texting allows us to keep in touch without trying to figure out a time that works best for a conference call.

I hate texts. hate them!!!! my bf texts all the freaking time and it makes me angry he has all day long conversations with friends that could take what... 5 minutes on the phone?
I mean I'm not really a phone person but just the bad spelling and grammar in texts makes me not send them.

I text alllll the time. I've got unlimited texting for $10 a month though, so it's worth it to me. I'm in meetings a lot that I can't just step out of to talk to someone, so it's easy to take five seconds and reply to a text than to excuse myself and miss out on part of the meeting.
Also, sometimes you just don't need to call someone. Texting is simple, easy and gets the point across just as easily as calling. BUT, you can multi-task while texting. I know I can't do a lot of things at once while on the phone.
I do hate having in depth conversations through texting when you could just as easily call though. I've had a few friends REFUSE to call for whatever reason, but continue to have a text-fight with me about something ridiculous. I just stop replying, usually.
