apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Survey: How Do You Tune In?

120108_sz_tvlaptop.jpg Over the holidays we caught up on some back episodes of Gossip Girl (yes, we know...). In one episode, Serena, complaining about her mom and step father's new house rules, exclaims, "What's next? No TV until after you finish your homework?" to which her brother replies, "Who watches TV on a TV anymore anyway?". Touché my friend, touché.

Sure we were watching GG on our Samsung boobtube, but only because we wanted a larger screen than what our laptop has to offer. We had downloaded this episode and plugged our Macbook into our TV's S-video port, which is one reason we don't have cable. Why pay $80/month for a bunch of channels we don't need when we could download the shows we actually watch for practically nothing (or in some cases, nothing).

So we wondered, how many of you are still watching "TV"?

If you are bound to the web we want to know how exactly you're watching that content? Are you glued to your monitor or do you have a nifty way of streaming your primetime to your flat screen? We're sure our S-video solution is oh so last year. How should we be getting our Gossip Girl fix?

I graduated from rabbit ears to satellite.

But now, I'm trying to figure out the cleanest connection between laptop and flatscreen. DV to VGA? or spring for the Apple TV.

Things were definitely a lot simpler with just the rabbit ears. Expectations were not as high. Now, wi-fi can and satellite can be spotty, wires have to be run.

i just moved a few months ago and haven't set up television service. i currently have free wireless and just bought a DVI -> HDMI cable to connect my macbook pro to my lcd tv.

While there are some shows I'd want to watch (mostly sports), most I can stream via their website the following day.

I canceled cable years ago.

I use a program called Rivet to stream content from my laptop wirelessly (over the network) to my Xbox 360, including HD content. The new Netflix streaming through the 360 fills in the rest of the gaps.

Only bummer is that DRM'd content can't be streamed, so I can't watch any iTunes purchases in this manner, which is extremely annoying considering I paid for them.

I ditched the TV last year when I moved. I figured I hadn't really used it in a long time any way and didn't have a good place for it in this apartment.

Now I just stream, mostly hulu, abc, and cbs.

I'm old school, yet new shcool as I don't normally view stuff on broadband, all I have is a 17" monitor and I'm not gonna sit at my desk and view stuff on a tiny screen and currently don't have a laptop.

Yet I'm new school in that I'm all digital but old school in that I get all that I need off of good ol' fashioned rabbit ears and my local channels. to be digital, I have 2 digital set top boxes for the DVD recorder and VCR which have analog tuners and another set top box for the 12 YO TV in the bedroom but the big 32" LCD is recent and all digital and is HD as I bought it last June, thanks Shrub. :-)

I should say, I tend to only watch the occasional network show and mostly it's PBS and Create and if I think about it, I can view my favorite HGTV shows when needed via broadband and the PC.

No cable or TV in a couple of years. I stream onto my mac laptop and get Netflix DVDs (can't stream from Netflix on my system, I think it's a gen too old.) After a couple of years of this, I am getting tired of being chained to the laptop to watch anything. I'd like to have an actual separate screen of some kind. But, I don't see returning to cable or TV.

ciddyguy - are you streaming HGTV from their site? When I've looked for my faves, they're not available.

HGTV is on Hulu...
I have been cable free for two weeks, and loving it.
Basic cable comes free with our internet connection but I rarely watch it, only for HD content. Been using my mac mini, EyeTV Hybrid, Plex, torrents and my 175 GB Itunes library for entertainment.
so far so good.
