For many people, at least the ones we know, updating Twitter and Facebook is a daily routine that is right up there with having a cup of coffee in the morning. It is so common that the words themselves have become verbs in the same way that you don't do an online search, you Google something. Do you Twitter? Do you Facebook? But since many of the connections that you have on these services also tend to be part of your email contacts it got us thinking, is email on it's way out? Is your Facebook or Twitter use so much more frequent that you find yourself using it instead of your email? What do you say?

Facebook to keep up with friends and colleagues.
Twitter to post blog updates and observations and to follow the updates of others:

email for mostly professional correspondence and free digital archiving.

For anyone who is interested in surveying Twitter usage, I am conducting a survey of Twitter users for my PhD in Dublin City University:

If any Twitterers out there can spare 5 minutes to fill out the survey and maybe retweet it to their followers they would be a great help!
I will be tweeting the results of the analysis in due course via account "cheesemonger".
