The Minimal Studio Look?
Good Questions

072409unplggdgoodquets.jpgQ - A photographer friend sent me these photos of a studio space (it's a photography studio available for rent in the UK) and I'd really like to set up a similar space. I was wondering if you could help me hunt down a few of the elements like the speakers, lighting and office table...

I like the minimalism of the space shown in the photos I've included, and I've just moved into a similar industrial studio I don't want to clutter with stuff. Any other ideas for other elements that are in similar style that can give me the modern photographer studio look on a budget?

Editor - Jeremy, thanks for sharing the photos and space with us. First off, the speakers you see in the photo are JBL Creature II speakers, a seemingly favourite choice amongst techy aesthetes.

The next tip is about the lighting. Regina over at Apartment Therapy posted about creating a photography studio lighting look with an umbrella kit for just $33, and we think 1-2 of these would set the mood and look great inside a loft-studio style space.

We couldn't find an exact match of the white saw horse desk in the photo, but we think you can create a similar look using an IKEA VIKA ARTUR trestle with shelf and topping it with a sheet of glass or tabletop surface. If after all this you've got a some money left (a lot), a Plus Minus Zero LCD Television might look great on the floor or a low surface:

actually that desk is an ikea desk. saw it there today. i think it's a recent addition. there are several glass and laminate tops to chose from that will work with those trestle legs

I have those speakers, they are awesome. And very sleek! Somehow they just work great aesthetically with Mac products.

splinky: I totally thought I remembered seeing that desk at IKEA when I last visited, but I couldn't find it online or in the catalog (which is about to be updated). Thanks for validating the suspicion!

Along with the Darth Vader's helmet aesthetics, I've been pretty happy with JBL creature speakers. They were pretty cheap a few years ago and I got some for home and some for work.

Caveat: I'm not an audiophile so while these are certainly adequate, if you're more into sound than I am, I have no idea if you'll be happy with them.

That TV is the most rediculously expensive thing I have seen for a long time! A 480p 8inch TV that gives up the best part of an LCD (size), and then they go and charge you $1200 for it. There better be some FREAKISHLY good speakers in that TV...
