Adjusting your HDTV

We have an HDTV but have never taken the time to properly calibrate it. Since most TV's are set up to optimize the picture when viewed in a store environment, what you see when you take it home and turn it on may not be the best for your living room or for the longevity of your TV. Yahoo News has a nice first hand account of three different HDTV calibration methods and how they stack up to each other.

The first option is a simple DIY DVD while the second option is a slightly more advanced DIY option that involves the use of a light sensor which attaches to the screen. The third and final option was that of hiring a professional. For approximately $50 more than the advanced DIY kit, the change made by the professional calibrator "wasn't a dramatic improvement over the default settings, but it was noticeable." The verdict? According to Yahoo News, hiring the professional is a worthwhile approach due to the availability of high quality equipment used for the calibration as well as access to advanced settings on the TV that the average consumer may not have.
