Today's New York Times reports "nearly six million people with digital receivers may still lose TV signals." A recent study found that digital reception may not live up to your expectations, and predicts that many will have to install additional exterior antennas when the digital switch occurs next February.

If you are like the other 21 million Americans who receive television from over-the-air signals, this may affect you. The DTV Transition Coalition has been helpful in suggesting and giving rebates on converter boxes, but you'll still need to receive a strong signal.
The NY Times article points out that there are many geographical obstacles that affect signal quality. And while an analog TV signal gradually fades out, digital signal exhibits a "cliff effect." You'll either get a picture or you won't.
So, when the transition occurs next February, and you rely on rabbit ears for your TV fix, keep in mind you might need more than a converter box, you may need to up your antenna strength too.

I never had any complaints when I had rabbit ears and only major network stations--I knew what to expect.
Sure enough, add direct tv and nothing but headaches. High def channels only one day, only network channels another day. High def channels scrambling one day, satellite searching for signal another day...
I asked for it.
