Philips Gets Serious About Immersion

012009_an_philips-21-9-lcd-tv.jpgWe aren't too sure whether to be impressed or frustrated by the new standard that Philips is attempting to introduce to the consumers this coming year with their new 56-incher that features the world's first a 21:9 aspect ratio LCD HDTV. Sure, we've seen our share of wide-aspect stuff - we got ultra-wide aquariums, bulletin boards, and dual-monitor setups. But a super long movie watching machine? Hmm... we think it's time for some Photoshop...

012009_an_philips-21-9-lcd-tv3.jpgSeeing as blockbuster hits these days are filmed in the 2.39:1 format, the 21:9 ratio doesn't sound that too crazy when you think about it. The Philips Cinema 21:9 LCD TV also features Ambilight Spectra light technology, which basically lightens the edges of the screen to avoid eyestrain when watching movies in a dimly lit room. It all adds up to an immersible experience Philips is hoping to achieve with a high end set that we, admittedly, are extremely curious to experience sometime in the near future.

Expect these sets to be hitting stores later this year in Europe, possibly later in the United States. Pricing has yet to be announced. More information can be found on their website.

I don't think this will catch on. Even as we switch to more HD television programming, the majority of that is in to 4:3 aspect ratio. Given that scenario, watching TV on this LCD would be the same as watching a 23incher... at 4 times the cost!
